Geopolitics

Module Objectives
The course deals with geopolitical, geo-economics and global security issues and essentially tries to ‘touch’ upon the global economic and political interconnections that “keep” our planet together and, to a certain extent, safeguard the present and future of humanity as a species.
More particularly, the concept of geo-economics refers to a transition from the classical geopolitical thinking of military and ‘hard’ power to other forms of power increasingly related to the economic field and referred to as the ‘logic of war under the grammar of trade’.
The module tries to explain some aspects of the increasingly interdependent and interconnected world of today by ‘touching’ on issues of global security within a transnational competition regime (which still includes the possibility of conflicts).

Introduction: Geopolitics and Geo-economics.
Are we living in a very polar world? What do you say?
The Rise of the East.
Growing Giants and the Other Poles of the System.
Europe: A Continent in disarray?
The Muslim World: From the Arab Spring to the Salafists and Generals?
Energy or Why We Cannot Live Without It.
Demography and Resources.
Climate change, Migrations and Conflicts around the world at the time of global (in) security?
Trying to understand our (partly) interdependent but contradictory world.
Teaching and Assessment
Written exams or an essay of 5,000 words.
