Module Leaders: Papadopoulos G. Apostolos, Pratsinakis Manolis
This module introduces students to the qualitative methods and qualitative research as it is used in human geography and social sciences in general. Students are trained on the basic methods of quantitative and qualitative data collection, the techniques of evaluating these data as well as on combining various methods of data collection and analysis.
Moreover, the module aims at educating students in scientific research and in the multidimensional approach of their research subject. The need to use mixed methodologies is underlined, while also the assumption that quantitative research is more ‘objective’ than qualitative research is criticized.
In this context, the module paves the way for reconnecting research hypotheses with the phases of selecting the best research method for data collection, data processing, data analysis and, finally, data interpretation.
In this module students have the oppportunity to learn how to utilize qualitative data analysis software. In short, students will be able to develop their cognitive and scientific skills and learn how to make better use of the available research methods.
Epistemological discussion and cognitive aspects of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The significance of method for collecting empirical data. Analysing the role of qualitative method and qualitative analysis in geography and social sciences in general.
The significance of theory for carrying out empirical research and more particularly qualitative research. Comparing quantitative and qualitative research methods. Measurement and explanation in human geography. Analysing the questionnaire methodology and critique of quantitative methods.
Methods and techniques of collecting and analysing qualitative data: in-depth interview, semi-structured interview, biographical method, focus groups, participatory observation, action research, case study design, etc. Difficulties of interpreting the qualitative data and critique of qualitative methods.
Mixed methodologies for researching specific phenomena. Multi-methodological approaches in human geography. Strategies for combining quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of combining different research methods. Teaching the use of a qualitative analysis software.
Classes and tutorials for preparing and submitting short written assignments as well as teaching the use of qualitative analysis software. Written exam, learning the use of qualitative analysis software and submission of short written assignments.
