The Regional Planning course is structured by theory lectures and labs involving also the group study of regional administrative sub-area:
Ι. The theory course lectures aim at: Introducing the field of Regional Planning to the students, in relation to its conceptual background, its scientific terminology and to providing an understanding of its importance based on the European and national experience; Critically analyzing the basic theories and approaches, allowing the students to comprehensively perceive the under different theoretical outlooks the various regional dynamics and policy systems based on the distinct regional plans and programmes.
ΙΙ. The elaboration-submission of a collective work (2-3 students) aiming at developing the student’s knowledge, skills and capacity building in relation to: Basic information and data sources and modes of structuring the appropriate informational basis for the analysis of regional dynamics and policy; and tools, elaboration techniques and GIS mapping processes. The course content involves the following: The notion of Regional Planning and its relationship to Geography studies; Physical and economic planning; regional planning theories; regionalization and regional governance; types and levels of regional planning; land-use and planning at the regional level; systems of land use registration and mapping; the regional plan and programme; the changing structure of regional planning in Europe and Greece; inter and inter regional policy; inter-boundary regional policies; natural resources, coastal areas and river basins; regional clusters; regional innovation strategies; service location strategies; industrial regeneration strategies; the rural areas; per–urban spaces; major infrastructural works; regional planning and disaster mitigation; urban network and regional development; globalization and regional planning; new peripheries towards a new regionalization and spatial plans.
