This is an introductory course in the fields of numerical methods and the simulation. At the end of the course the student is expected to know basic algebraic array operations, interpolation schemes and new simulation methods.
It is also designed to give students fluency in MATLAB, including the mapping toolbox. The course consists of interactive lectures with students mainly doing numerical problems in MATLAB.
– Introduction to MATLAB. Description of the basic functions and software capabilities.
– Basic principles and techniques of array algebra.
– Library functions in MATLAB. User-defined functions. Data visualization. Examples of line graphs, scatter plots, bar plots and area graphs.
– Interpolation methods. Least-square method and spatial interpolation.
– Gridded fields analysis. Mesh and contour plots.
– Examples of numerical simulations and principles of mathematical modeling.
The teaching method is consisting of 1.5 hours attending lectures on weekly basis. Two assignments covering data analysis and MATLAB simulations are contributed to the final grade. MATLAB source codes will be submitted for assessment through eclass platform.
