Globalization is a very complex phenomenon as it is directly influencing the economy, society, culture and politics. However, that does not mean that it is the sole force behind what is taking place in front of our eyes. The objective of the course is to critically present the main issues and “controversies” around the current discussion of globalization from a geographical perspective and always in relation to the European space.
During the course, we present the multiple and at times “contradictory” facets of globalization from the perspective of economic, political and population geography. To start with, the emphasis is on the examination of long-term developments in relation to the geography of international trade and foreign investment. At the same time, the course also attempts to shed light on contemporary forms of spatial organization that many transnational companies employ in manufacturing, services and retailing. On the other hand, current developments in relation to global population change are also put under the analytical microscope. Last but not least, contemporary issues of globalization which are central from a political geography perspective like forms of ‘globalization from below’, the rise of populism and technological advancement are also included within the structure of the course.
The course unfolds through a series of lectures from the part of the teachers, but also, the presentations of case studies from the part of students as part of their unfolding projects. The academic performance of students is valued through their participation in the class, the quality of their essays and oral presentations and two short written assignments during the life of the course.
